Tie layer

MAH-grafted adhesive polymer (PE / PP / PS) — Chemically bonds dissimilar polymer layers. Prevents delamination in co-extruded structures.

Technical view

What is Tie layer and what is it for?

A tie layer is a polyolefin with maleic anhydride grafted onto its backbone. The anhydride groups form chemical bonds with the terminal amine and hydroxyl groups of EVOH or polyamide during extrusion, while the polyolefin backbone fuses with the PE or PP layer. Two materials that would not otherwise adhere are thus joined by a durable interface.

The right tie is chosen by carrier polymer: PE-graft for PE-based structures, PP-graft for PP-based ones. Graft level, melt flow index and the service temperature of the structure are also considered. A wrongly chosen tie causes delamination that stays invisible in the lab but appears after sterilisation, thermoforming or at the end of shelf life.

Used across flexible packaging, thermoformed containers, multilayer pipe, fuel lines and co-injected bottle structures.
