PA6
Polyamide 6 — polymer and compound — Polyamide 6 for film and engineering applications. High mechanical strength, thermal stability and good barrier properties.
Technical view
What is PA6 and what is it for?
PA6 is produced by ring-opening polymerisation of caprolactam. It offers high toughness, wear resistance and a good oxygen barrier, but it is hygroscopic: it softens and changes dimension as it absorbs moisture. That behaviour is the main factor governing recipe and drying discipline on both the film and injection sides.
Film grades are used for puncture resistance and thermoformability in oriented (BOPA) and cast polyamide film, generally within a multilayer structure alongside EVOH and polyolefins. On the injection side, glass-fibre reinforced compounds are chosen for technical parts replacing metal.
